5 unmissable sights in Europe

The world is full of weird and wonderful places, and Europe certainly is no exception. While there are countless sights across the continent that attract millions of visitors each year, there are equally as many hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. If you’re looking for somewhere unique to visit, we’ve put together a list of five unmissable sights in Europe you’ll be mad to let slip.

  1. Tinto River, Spain

While we wouldn’t suggest going for a dip in this river, the Rio Tinto is still somewhere you’ll want to visit at least once in your lifetime. While countless photos give you a glimpse at the marvel you’ll see, they’ll never quite capture the incredible brick-red colour of the water due to years upon years of mining in the area. Copper, gold, iron and other metals have all been mined in the area, giving the water it’s unique colour, but also giving it incredibly high acidity! The surrounding area has a ragged brilliance, however, so it’s certainly somewhere to take a (careful) walk and enjoy the sunshine and the sights.

  1. Hum, Croatia

While time travel isn’t exactly on the horizon, there’s no reason why you can’t take a step back into history. Hum in Croatia makes it extremely easy. This town was first established all the way back in the 11th century, but has remained pretty much intact ever since. Consisting of only two streets and just 30 or so residents, its sheer beauty is worth the trip alone. If you want another reason to go, the mistletoe schnapps is exactly that. Brandy lovers are also catered for here, when every Istrian brandy maker comes together to let visitors taste different types of brandy!

  1. Popeye Village, Malta

For a taste of Disney outside of Disneyland, Popeye Village could be just what you’re looking for. This so-called ‘village’ is actually one of the youngest in Europe, barely being 40 years old. In fact, Disney Productions decided to erect this village as a film set for the Popeye musical movie. While this movie isn’t exactly one of the most well-known in Disney’s filmography, this village has left quite the interesting place to visit. Popeye Village is now a family fun park, where kids and adults alike can meet Popeye characters, go on boat trips, watch shows and even indulge in a glass of wine upon arrival. Of course, it’s location in Malta means sun, sun, sun so there’s really something to enjoy here for everyone.

  1. The Museum Of Broken Relationships, Zagreb, Croatia

While this doesn’t sound like the most entertaining of places, hear us out! This museum is actually full of all kinds of quirky, unusual and emotional objects that can keep you entertained for hours. This museum was originally started by two Croatian artists, who went on to invite their friends to donate more items from broken relationships, and so the museum grew. Of course, you’ll have your hair share of borrowed clothes, tear-stained love letters and stuffed toys, but there’s quite the unique set of items too, from axes and bottles filled with tears. If none of that interests you, the gift shop alone is worth a trip just for its quirky and hilarious items on sale!

  1. A Country In Miniature, Portugal

Don’t have time to see the entirety of Portugal, but really want to? Portugal do Pequenitos, located in Coimbra, houses miniature versions of some of Portugal’s most famous and much-loved sites. What’s more, you can even pass other countries on your trip! Yes, really. You can walk through Brazil, Macau, East Timor and have a stop in Lusophone Africa if you so wish. Oh, and did we mention India? This sight is perfect for fans of the unique, and while you might be missing out on seeing the actual monuments, this, in our opinion, is a pretty okay alternative for now.

Europe is filled with the weird, wonderful and beautiful and getting the opportunity to travel and see it all is a dream we all share. Where will you go first?
